Khutba is a word not many modern Muslims are aware of, especially those that receive modern education. But for those who have read Quran and also the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, Khutba Khutbah remain important words that are meant to be observed in one’s life as a Muslim. The prophet after his flight from Mecca to Madina, chose to address his disciples giving his last sermon, expressing his views as a Khatib. His sermon contained meaningful words carefully chosen and meant to be followed by the entire humanity. After the Prophet, Khutba Khutbah was delivered by the four caliphs and even the governors of the Umayyad Empire. However, during the Abbasid Empire the task of giving these sermons was transferred to qadis or religious judges rather than by caliphs themselves.
One must follow the preaching in his life
Today, Khutba Khutbah has come to refer to the religious teachings that are delivered to the devotees who come to attend the Friday noon prayers. This is a service that begins with adhaan where the Khatib addresses the congregation and preaches them in two parts that are separated by a long pause where the Khatib sits. It is obligatory on the part of all those present and hearing this sermon to praise God in an attempt to show one’s gratitude towards him. The main purpose of Khutba Khutbah is to impress the significance of maroof (virtue) while at the same time denouncing vices (munkar). These sermons try to drive all Muslims towards virtues in life and practice them as far as possible.
